L’AMOUR, THE FRENCH INTERPRETATION

In recent years, I have noticed more and more that my views about love and relationships have very little in common with those espoused by most Americans. The American model, advertised and perpetuated ad infinitum by the media, involves a clichéd montage of “finding that special one” and then living happily ever after. What happens after all the projections and self-delusions falls away from the relationship is a topic of little concern to most Americans. Analysis and discussions dealing with the unsightly aspects what takes place in a real relationship of any significant length never sees the light of day.

In this area, I find the French have devoted much more time and energy; There seem to be a more receptive audience to the on going discussions regarding what is love, what is marriage, and what goes on in such relationships.

Some of my favorite movies in recent years are French films dealing with these topics. They are all readily available via your local netflix or blockbuster.com; I would say these movies, apart from being immensely entertaining, are at the forefront in the ongoing dialectic about the nature of love and marriage in our age. So go and check them out.
